Mes

Mes is a village in the municipality of Shkoder, Albania, located approximately 5km northeast of the village. It is best known for its Mesi Bridge, which is one of the longest bridges in the Balkans at 108m long. It is located on the Kiri River and was built by Mehmet Pasha Bushati in the late 18th century during the Ottoman Empire (who also built the Lead Mosque of Shkoder, Albanian: Xhamia e Plumbit).

According to data from the Regional Directorate of the Cultural Heritage of Shkodra, the bridge was constructed in two phases: The first phase includes the large central arch building (21.5m) and three others along the way. When the Kir River flow outflanked the bridge, the second phase of bridge construction began, with smaller arches built at either end, four on the left and five on the right.

The bridge has been damaged over time by devastating floods, with floodwaters cutting away at the arches, but some restorations were completed a few years ago to address the issue.

Mesi Bridge is a "Cultural Monument", protected by the state, and represents cultural heritage that extends beyond the national dimension. This is what makes Mesi Bridge a destination to visit and definitely to not miss while visiting Albania.
